Lost and Found

The winter came, but there still was no snow. Suddenly, after a few very warm days, it froze very hard. Although the flowers and other heat-loving plants were carefully covered with pine twigs, grandma was still bothered about the roses and grandpa was worried about the grapes.
Shortly before the New Year, the warm weather returned, and the snow was light and fluffy. After receiving a large list from grandma, grandpa drove to buy groceries. Meanwhile, grandma got down to work and started sweeping snow from the porch. It turned out it was useless because the snow wouldn't stop. So she put the broom back in the corner of the veranda and called Masha to play snowballs.
Now this was really something to do! Masha avoided grandma's snowballs with great skill, not a single grandma's snowball could hit her. In her turn, she could surely hit grandma, but the snowballs were too hard to make. As soon as Masha made them, they fell apart in midair, and instead of snow balls only a bunch of flakes reached grandma.
That was when grandpa came home. He opened the gates and drove his car into the garage. Grandma was about to go home but grandpa called out.
"Hey, don't go! I want to play snowballs with you too."
And then it became even more fun. Grandma and the little girl teamed up and bombarded grandpa with snowballs. But grandpa, he was quite cunning: he took off the gloves and started to make snowballs with bare hands. His snowballs were round and firm and did not fall apart in midair. He managed to hit both Masha and grandma.
Masha was going to take off her gloves too, to make snowballs like grandpa. But grandma did not let her and even scolded grandpa for it. But he kept on advancing until he gained a complete victory: he backed his granddaughter and grandma into the snow. Pleased with the victory, he then gave them a hand, shook the snow off of them and led them inside.
Masha was the first to take off the jacket. While grandpa was carrying everything he had bought from the car into the hall and grandma bringing it all to the kitchen, she went to the playroom upstairs and played there.
Having finished with the grocery bags, grandpa was about to undress but suddenly he began to slap his jacket and turn its pockets inside out.
"Why are you still in the jacket?" grandma asked from the kitchen.
"You see, I can't find my wallet…"
Grandpa went back to the garage to check if he had dropped the wallet there while taking out the grocery bags, but to no avail.
"Maybe you dropped it while playing snowballs with us?" Grandma's voice came from the kitchen.
So grandpa went to the yard and checked all the suspicious-looking dark spots and other things swept by snow. But he still couldn't find his wallet and returned home.
"You may have slipped it past your pocket while going to the last shop", grandma suggested. "Then this is the end."
"No, I couldn't have lost it in the shop", grandpa answered. "After the shop, I drove to the gas station and paid for the gas, and there…"
"And there you dropped it", grandma agreed. "However, check your car once again, maybe it's somewhere there."
Grandpa went to the garage and searched through the entire car but didn't find anything. Then he headed to the yard again and, hoping for miracles, cleared the area where they had played snowballs. However, the miracle did not happen.
He returned home and called grandma.
"I don't feel so good…"
Grandma laid him on the couch and went to fetch some valerian drops.
Their cat Smokey felt the smell of valerian, followed grandma from the kitchen and started yelling like crazy.
"Did you have a lot of money in your wallet?" grandma asked when grandpa had drunk the medicine.
"Money is no big deal", grandpa answered, "there is a much worse loss than that! I had my driving license and registration certificate in my wallet. I can't drive without them."
Smokey screamed as if someone was cutting off his tail.
"But more importantly", grandpa resumed, "more importantly, today is the thirtieth of December, tomorrow everyone will celebrate the New Year. Both adults and children will have holidays, and nobody will hand me out the new documents. That means we won't be able to go anywhere by car for a really long time…"
The cat kept on demanding the valerian drops, and Masha went downstairs to see what he was yelling about.
"What happened here?" she asked.
"Masha, did you happen to see grandpa's wallet?" grandma asked just in case.
"The black one?"
"Yes, the black one, with grandpa's money and documents."
"You won't be mad at me?"
"Did you see it??? Do you know where it is?"
Masha reached her hand under the pillow on the couch where grandpa lay and drew out the wallet.
"Did you hide it? Why? Grandpa could've died!"
"I didn't want to-o-o", Masha burst into tears. "It was a joke. I thought grandpa would start to look for it and then I would give it back to him."
"Where did you find it?" grandpa brightened up.
"On the table, in the hall…"
When mom and dad came, Masha told them about what had happened. When they all sat down for dinner, grandpa was the happiest one at the table.
"I'm a scatterbrain! It's my fault, I put my wallet on the table, went to play snowballs and then forgot about it. Now, thanks to Masha, I'm so glad and so happy!
And Masha sat there and thought about how she could make grandma just as happy. She probably wouldn't have time for it this year, but the next New Year is too long to wait for…
Maybe on Women's Day, March 8th?
